Philosophy
My childcare philosophy is actually two-fold. First and foremost, I believe that children need a chance to be just what they are ~ children.
I believe that a child's "job" is to play. Children learn invaluable information about their world through play and everyday life
experiences. I strive to provide an atmosphere filled with developmentally appropriate toys and equipment that encourage imagination
and exploration.
Children are exposed to valuable social skills while involved in play, such as: learning to share, to take turns, to respect another's
feelings, and basic manners. This is not to say that they will always get it right. Sometimes those toddler emotions can just carry them
away ~ as we have all experienced. With consistency, however, they do learn.
Lots of fresh air and exercise are also extremely important for growing bodies. Outside play is an integral part of our day.
After the above needs are being consistently met, I also believe that children should be exposed to counting, colors, and the alphabet.
Do I think that this type of curriculum should be forced upon a child? That a child of preschool age or earlier should be made to feel
pressure to learn these things? That a young child should have to worry about tests? To put it simply, no I do not. I do not believe
that "pressure" has any place in a young child's environment and that is how I run my daycare.
I can guarantee you that your child will be read to, will be exposed to letters, numbers and shapes and will be given ample opportunities
to take part in arts & crafts that are geared towards helping them to recognize and differentiate between these things. I can also
guarantee you that your child will be given opportunities to just plain do something for the "fun" of doing it.
I can also guarantee you that your child will never be made to take part in a lesson, or an arts & crafts time if they do not want to.
I will never pressure them to learn. If I cannot do it in a fun way, in a way that the child is interested in ~ then I cannot do it.
I hope that this explains to you a little bit about how I run each day at my daycare. I know that not everyone will agree with me, and
I am okay with that. As long as the children in my care go home each day having ran, jumped, blown bubbles, danced, sang, played in
some good old fashioned dirt, and yes, learned something new that day, then I will feel like I have done my job
