About Us:

Sunflower Nursery School is a Montessori-based Preschool and Family Day Care. I target teachers and their children as I am open only during the school year. I accept only 5-6 children at a time so that I have plenty of one on one time to work with each child.

I provide preschool curriculum and activities in the morning from 9-11:30, I encourage chidren to choose educational and challenging activities during this time. I also may offer paperwork as the child is ready. Afternoons are free play and children may choose “work” or toys at this time.

Learning is self-guided, children choose the activities and “work” which catch their interest and motivates them to learn. I work with each child on their individual academic level and give them lessons as they are ready. We also have a short group learning time each morning. We talk about the date and do the calendar, then read a short book or discuss the current learning theme. I may also introduce new “work” at this time.

I have my large walk-out basement equipped with low shelves for easy access to activities by the children. The room is divided into different subject areas; math, language, science and geography, art, sensorial, free play toys, etc. I provide a healthy breakfast, lunch and snack daily.

We have a large fenced in yard with play equipment for plenty of exercise. Our patio is a great place for a picnic or bike riding and often becomes an extension of our classroom on nice days.

Curriculum:

Sunflower Nursery School is Montessori-based. Much of our learning is self-guided. Children choose activities and work which appeal to their interests. I work with each child on their academic level and give them lessons as they are ready to grasp a new concept. Most of our activities are hands-on since this is how children prefer to learn.

I also use a large variety of workbooks to choose the paperwork which will most appeal to the children. We also have group learning times where we go over the alphabet, letter sounds, numbers, etc. as a group. Art is usually done together as a group. We have a great variety of materials for each section of learning and I am always adding new materials to the classroom.

Philosophy

At Sunflower Nursery School I strive to provide an environment where children can grow physically, emotionally, intellectually and socially. I believe childhood should be an even mixture of learning and play. Children have a natural curiosity toward learning and children learn best through play.

Most of the learning activities at Sunflower Nursery School are hands-on, fun and catch the child’s interest. Children also have a natural need for routine and order. We follow a daily schedule to give the child a sense of security.

All of our activities and toys have a place on the shelves, children love this sense of order and always know where to find what they need. I also believe that children need to be taught very early on discipline and responsibility. We provide opportunities to learn discipline by encouraging participation in group activities and discussions. I require the children to sit together at the table until everyone is finished eating, never more than 15 minutes, this also provides lessons in grace and courtesy.

I strive to foster independence in children. Instead of doing for the child, I show them how to do for themselves. An independent child is a happy child.
